With the recent changes to Timeline, Facebook allows you to upload a smaller profile image that shows in the lower left corner of your cover image and is the small thumbnail that follows you around as you post all over Facebook. Great opportunity right? Well when they first brought out the changes, that image was 125 px X 125 px and many of the larger companies out there had some lovely designed images created to work with their cover image.
Well recently Facebook changed the size of these profile images without much notice at all. So one day you went onto your page or profile and your cleverly designed images didn’t seem to fit anymore and worse, looked blurry. Well they changed the size of the visible image to 160 X 160, although Facebook asks you to upload an image that is a tad larger (180 X 180) and then resizes it to fit.
What should your image be of? Facebook suggests you use your logo, I disagree. I think if you are Coke or Pepsi or Nike, you can get away with using your logo, but if you are a small business trying to build a personal relationship with people in your community, it’s far better to use your professional head shot in this space. Let the world see who they are connecting with, it’s more personal and makes you more recognizable next time you are at a local event.
So how do you this this?

When you hover your cursor over your image space, you can see the “Edit Profile Picture” option comes up. Click on that and you see these options:
Here you can chose a picture from your photos on your page, take a photo on your computer, upload a photo from your hard drive, edit the thumbnail you have or remove it.
All are pretty self-explanatory but when you click on “Edit Thumbnail” you can move the image around within the allowed box size so you can position it to show what you want. This is the image that will be seen all over Facebook as you post as your page, so make sure you set it right. But have no fear, you can change this image and it’s layout whenever you like.
I hope you enjoyed this article, please feel free to post your comments. Let’s say one day you create a post about something that gets a huge number of comments and likes, this post really shows visitors to your page how engaged your page is so you want to make sure people see it. Now you can pin that post to show as your first post on your page for one week at a time. Talk about a great marketing tool! Got a sale you want to promote? Create a special post with a link to your purchase page and pin it to the top, that way everyone visiting will see it. How do you pin your posts? After you writing and post it, hover over the post near the upper right corner to see this:

See the edit button, click on it, click Pin to Top to have it show at the top every day for a week!
Now if you don’t want to pin it, you can highlight it. See the star beside the edit button? Click that and highlight a post. This makes the post wider so that it fills the entire width of your screen instead of only to the half way mark. It’s a great thing to do to posts that have exceptional images to go with them or any posts you would like to share. You can’t highlight and pin the same post at the same time however, so it’s one or the other per post.
Another great addition to your page is that now your fans can send a private email to the administrator without having to post directly on your wall. This is perfect for a client who has a specific question, a customer who has a complaint or constructive criticism or just to ask you a private question.
Now that you know you can’t add any contact info, bargain info or call to actions on your cover image, you are probably wondering where you can promote your business? Enter the “about” section. This is the area just below your profile image and can be edited as often as you would like. I wouldn’t recommend a lot of text here; this is a good place for your website address, your contact info and even a call to action. Change it up daily and see what works best.
Beside your “about” section are 4 small images. These are where your custom tabs are shown.

The photo box is permanent, but you can rearrange the other boxes to show as you would like. You can only show 4 boxes total and you can upload custom images to represent each tab. Here, you could have your “likes” showing and create a custom button with a call to action asking people to like your page. You see the little arrow to the right? People can click on this and see up to 12 custom tabs that you can create.
How to change your image on a tab? Click on the arrow to the right of the tabs, hover over the tab that you would like to change until the little edit pencil shows on the upper right hand corner.
Click on it to see these options:

And this is how you organize your tabs, change the image and change the names of the tabs in edit settings.
These are some pretty nifty changes, if you need custom tab images for your fanpage, I have a special on right now, I can build you a custom image for your tab for $30.00 plus HST each right now until the end of March, to help get you ready for the launch of your Timeline fanpage. Contact me here to order your images for your tabs now.
Let me know your thoughts, how are you going to use these changes to your advantage?
Talk to you soon,
Sherri-Lee
Now that you are familiar with your control panel, let’s look at the new cover image. Gone are the days when you could just throw up your logo and have it work. Now Facebook has created a large image at the top of your page as a welcoming image to your “likers” but there are rules around what you can use in this image. Here is the gist:
The picture is best at this size – 850 wide by 315 high, however if you post a smaller picture, Facebook will stretch the picture to fit.
- You cannot have any contact information for you on the image, this includes, your website, your email address, your physical address or your phone number.
- You cannot have a call to action.
- You cannot have pricing.
- You cannot make reference to Facebook terms like “like” or “share”
These are pretty simple rules and are only limiting if you let them be. Make this image something that shows the world what your company is all about in one graphic image. Be creative, do something fun, show the world who you are and what you are, without selling. This is after all what Facebook is all about.
Remember this image is public and anyone who visits your page will see it, so make it engaging and interesting and you can still create buzz about your business.
You also have the small profile picture to add to your cover image. This is 180px by 180px but make sure it scales well as this is now the thumbnail that is posted beside your posts on people’s walls. I have heard many people suggesting that you use your logo for this image, but I prefer using my head shot. People want to know you, the person, not just you the company. If you have a large organization that doesn’t have a clearly defined person representing your business, then go with the logo.
Have you seen some great cover images? Mention them here so we can all have a look at them.
Need help with a custom cover image that represents your brand well? I can create a custom cover image for you for only $105.00 plus HST. This offer is only available until March 31, after that the price will go up so book now to confirm your spot.
Next up? We’ll be talking about the about section and your custom tabs.
Talk to you soon,
Sherri-Lee
Are you still reeling from the changes to your fanpage that Facebook announced last week? Well don’t worry, it’s not all bad, in fact there is plenty good in the announcements. Over the next few posts we are going to dive deeper into the changes so you will be as ready as possible to switch over on or before March 30.
The first good news is that you have until March 30 to do anything about your page. After March 30, Facebook will change your page over for you. But until then you can preview the changes without messing with how everyone else sees your page. When you log into your page now, you will see this nice new banner at the top from Facebook explaining about the changes coming up and giving you a chance to “Preview” or “Learn More”. Take the time to go through the “Learn More” section, because believe me with this change over, knowledge is power.

When you click the “Preview” option you will see this:

Here you can click “Publish Now” (don’t) or “Start Tour” (do) or “Help” (Maybe).
Here you are seeing the new Admin Panel. Take time to look through it. Your notifications are here, a list of new likes – this is really cool, to have them listed out for you like this. Your insights are here and your new message panel. Now your fans can message you privately instead of having to post everything to your wall. This is exciting! However, you cannot message your fans privately…yet.
You see about half way down the page, the buttons that say “Manage, Build Audience and Help”? Here’s what they do.
When you click on the Manage button you get your “Edit Page”, which takes you to your back end just like before. There’s the “Use Activity Log” which takes you to a list of the activity on your page, there is the “See Banned Users…” button which opens a new page showing you anyone you have banned and this is where you find the “Use Facebook as your page” option.
Under “Build Audience” your options are: Invite Email Contacts. This gives you the option to invite people from your email lists on various email clients. Invite Friends. This opens a window with all your personal friends listed to invite to like your page and share page, which allows you to share your page to your profile and create an ad which of course takes you to the advertising option to buy ads.

Under “Help”, take the time to go through these options. Facebook has set these up to help you learn how to use your page to the fullest, take advantage of it.
OK enough for today, go through your admin panel and get familiar with the preview of your new page. We will be back soon with more info on your cover image and much more!

Due to the holidays, we will be covering two weeks in this edition.
Late in December, Facebook announced it would start adding “sponsored stories ads” in your news stream, starting in January 2012. Sponsored stories came about in January 2011 and are some of the most exciting ad options for a long time, as they are based on your friends endorsement of a brand. Currently they appear on the right hand column of your newsfeed or wall but will soon be appearing to you in your newsfeed as a post. Facebook claims that because sponsored stories are based on likes, comments and check ins, these activities could show up in your feed anyway.
What do you think of this change? I can see the benefits to marketers, but wonder if it will become too intrusive for the everyday user?
With Timeline rolling out on Facebook, many marketers are seeing great opportunities for you to promote your brand. Now there is a service called moo.com that will create business cards for you using your new Timeline profile picture. Simply go to your Timeline page click on “about” then scroll down to your contact info and click on the little business card icon there. This will open another window where you can preview your new business card and make changes before ordering. The good news is the first box of cards is free from moo.com. While you are there, check out the rest of their great products!
No super big announcements this week… check back here next week to see what happens in
Social Media this week!
1) Know who you’re talking to – are you clear on who your target market is? Are they actually on your fanpage or following you on Twitter? Make sure your posts connect with them. If not, you are missing the boat and you need to find them.
2) Have a plan about what you are posting – it happens to us all sometimes, you’re working away and realize you haven’t checked your Twitter or Facebook yet and so quickly jump on them and try to think of something to say. Is it a random thought that is disconnected from your mission for being on social networks? Sit down once a month and think about what you are doing on these networks and create a plan, even go as far as writing your posts in advance to make sure you have a momentum to them.
3) Be interesting – people may be interested in what the Khardashian girls are having for breakfast (are they really?) but most people probably aren’t that interested in what you are eating, unless you are a famous foodie. So be selective about what you post, be creative in how you post it and be brave enough to be daring; say the unpopular, challenge the status quo, be different (just be sure you can take the heat of this kind of commentary, because it will get you attention).
4) Be more interested in helping others than promoting yourself – back to your purpose, how can you help someone today? How can you make their life a little easier, is it about selling your product or service? No, it’s about being as human as possible with every given moment even on some of the most impersonal places. People will remember you for caring or for pretending to care, so make sure you are being authentic.
5) Be consistent – this is almost worse than NOT having a presence at all. Don’t get hit with the bug to post, go crazy for a week and post multiple times a day and then disappear, that kind of inconsistency will come back to bite you in the long run. It’s like finding a restaurant that makes the best breakfast, but every second time you go there they are closed, how often would you check back? Make sure that when you post something interesting (see #3) that you stick around to respond to comments that come, otherwise it’s a monologue, not a conversation, and you can’t build a relationship with a monologue.
No matter what your business resolutions are for 2012, social media is not going away and is quickly becoming a must-have to any marketing plan. Make sure you do it right to get the most impact for your business. If you are overwhelmed or don’t have time to do your own social media, don’t be afraid to outsource this service to a social media professional.
What are your social media resolutions for 2012? Comments welcome below.
Happy New Year!

This week, Facebook starting launching their new Timeline for everyone. Until the 21th of Dec you can opt in to receive your new Timeline after that everyone will have it.
What does the new Timeline mean for you? Well first you can now upload a very nice large “cover” image on your profile page. The sizing has been a point of discussion on the web but for best uses make sure that it is at least 720 pixels wide. Now, the marketer in your will probably be thinking of creative ways to use this cover image to include business info for your new Facebook friends. Well although nothing overt is mentioned on Facebook’s help or terms and conditions, they do have this nice pop up when you upload your picture that says:
Choosing your cover photo
Pick a unique photo from your life to feature at the top of your timeline.
Note: This space is not meant for banner ads or other promotions. Please don’t use content that is commercial, promotional, copy-write infringing or already in use on other people’s covers.”
This makes it pretty clear that Facebook doesn’t want you to use this new cover picture for business, so pick something personal you want to share. It’s important to note that this picture will be visible to anyone who views your profile page, friend or not, so select your image carefully with public consumption in mind.
Timeline is intended to provide users with a “scrapbook to your life” as Mark Zuckerberg called it at a recent F8 conference, where Timeline was introduced. You can use this feature to share any content about your life, with strong encouragement to use pictures from your birth to present day.
Converting over to Timeline is only optional until Dec 21, after that we will have a scrapbook of our lives to some extent or other, depending on how you use it.
Other news this week:
Air France KLM announced this week that starting in 2012 you will be able to make your seat selection for your upcoming flight on popular social networking sites Facebook and LinkedIn using their social tool called “meet and seat”. This will be an opt-in tool that is still in development so few details are available at this time. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Microsoft announced the release of its new social networking site called So.cl (pronounced Social) meant to combine the power of Bing search with some of the niftiest parts of Twitter and Facebook. Lili Cheng, the Microsoft researcher who led development of So.cl, says, “So.cl is really an experimental research project focused on how social networking and search can be used for the purpose of learning.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this develops, the real question is; do we need another social network to add to the mix?
There is always so much to keep up with each week, stick with us to keep up to date on all things social media with our new weekly social media in review feature.
Recently several people have asked me about how to deal with negative or less than stellar comments on their Facebook fanpages, and it got me to thinking… as business owners don’t we prefer when someone complains to us directly so we can fix the problem for them, instead of them just going and telling all their friends about whatever they are unhappy about? A customer telling you about their complaint is your chance to make it right and to improve your business! What a gift!
Yes it’s out there for all to see… so should you just ignore it and let for everyone see it and quietly step around and whisper about? Not in my opinion, you should pick it up and take the time to talk about it and fix it! Respond to the poster; thank them for coming to your page to tell you about this, they didn’t have to after all. Then ask them for more details or just offer up a solution right then and there. Take the bull by the horn and face it head on! We all screw up sometimes; we all have grumpy people to deal with sometimes, no big deal. I always like to ask someone who is complaining how I can make things better for them… maybe they just want to be heard, maybe they want their money back or a coupon for a future visit… if I find out what will make them happy then I’m much more likely to be successful. If they wanted their money back and you offer them a coupon for a future visit, they probably won’t be satisfied with your solution.
When you deal with this situation with an open heart and with a sincere interest in helping to correct a problem, then you can’t go wrong. The original poster will see your effort and you might save an existing client but you have another opportunity here, you have an audience for your efforts… and you might just make some new clients because they are impressed with your efforts. It’s a win/win.
So in summary, we all get complaints occasionally, it’s how you deal with them that matters:
1) Reply quickly
2) Reply openly and honestly
3) Ask questions
4) Offer solutions
5) Don’t give up!
And never, ever, ever, ever remove the complaint from your wall. It’s been posted, someone, somewhere has seen it… removing it just makes you look bad.
Have you had complaints on your Facebook fanpage wall? How did you deal with it? What was the outcome?
Have you noticed recently, that you might not be getting updates from all your friends on your list? Facebook has made some changes lately that have resulted in a change in the way you see things. And the change means that you receive posts from the people you interact with most but then how do you keep up with what’s happening with some cared for friends that you might not have talked to in a while.
Well it’s an easy fix.
Scroll down to the bottom of the news feed on your home page. You might find that it bounces up and you have to scroll for a bit as more content loads. Just stick with it, eventually you will get to the bottom.
Click on “Edit Options”
Click on “Show Posts From”
Change the setting to “All of your Friends and Pages”.
Click “Save”.
Your home page will reload and now you will be able to see posts from all your friends and the pages you like, whether you’ve engaged with them recently or not.
